Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma Flashcards
define haematological malignancy
high amounts of abnormal/immature blood cells present in the blood
how would you define a leukaemia?
what differentiates the two types of leukaemia?
what type of cells they derive from (myeloid or lymphoid)
what two types of cells can leukaemia derive from?
myeloid and lymphoid cells
what are the 4 main subtypes of leukaemia?
Acute myeloblastic leukaemia
Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia
Chronic myeloid leukaemia
Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia
why are acute leukaemias harder to treat than chronic?
A chronic leukaemia is a leukaemia of a mature cell. The mature cell affected means the cell before it in the haemopoeisis pathway is the problem.
An acute leukaemia goes back more in the pathway – deeper in the bone marrow – harder to treat
