leucocytes Flashcards
what percentage of WBC do neutrophils make up
70
what is the primary job of neutrophils
phagocytose foreign molecules
how do phagocytes/neutrophils work
- attracted to pro inflammatory molecules and antibody coated pathogens
- phagocyte engulds pathogens
- lysosome fuses with pathogen and breaks down material with lysozymes
- material is digested and antigens are presented on cell membrane
- antigen presenting cell is formed
where does antigen presentation occur (most the time)
developing lymphocytes are often found in lymph nodes and other lymphoid tissues and its where antigen presentation often occurs
recombination uses random gene alterations to constantly make new B cell / T cell receptors
what virus typically attracts CD4 cells/t helper cells
HIV
human immunodeficiency virus
what are 4 ways antibodies work
- direct neutralisation
- facilitating phagocytosis
- agglutination
- activating complement
what is Hodgkins vs non-hodgkins
- non-Hodgkin lymphoma may arise in lymph nodes anywhere in the body
- whereas Hodgkin lymphoma typically begins in the upper body, such as the neck, chest or armpits.
what can hodkins negatively affect the body
both can cause depression of all cell lines therefore bleeding, infection and anaemia
what is multiple myeloma
plasma cell malignancy
- frequent invades bones and can lead to hypercalcemia, renal disease and anaemia
