What are we learning when learning how to identify supporting details?
We are learning how to identify the main idea of a social studies text and the details that support that main idea.
What’s a main idea?
A main idea is the author’s message about a topic.
What is an example of a main idea?
A speaker is speaking about John F. Kennedy’s assassination. He states that it was terrible and whoever did it needs to be punished and found. He also says that he is heartfelt for the family, and would do whatever he could to help. He also says that payback is needed. What is the main idea? The main idea is that John F. Kennedy’s assassination is a terrible loss and punishing is needed for those involved.
Why should we identify the main idea?
We should identify the main idea so we can improve our knowledge on what the author is trying to convey and their message. We also want to identify the main idea, so we can identify the details that support the main idea in the text.
What makes the main idea what it is?
The thing that makes the main idea what it is, is the message the author has sent to its audience through tone, words, and by the total groove of what they are saying.
What are two things to do before identifying supporting details?
You are to do the following: Identify the topic and statement of the text you are reading.
What do we mean when we say “topic” of a text?
We mean that, were asking for what the passage is about.
How do you identify the topic?
You should look at the title, skim the text, read the first and last sentence of every paragraph and and look for repeated words.
What is the next step after identifying the topic when it comes to identifying supporting details?
You should identify the statement of the text.
What is a statement?
A statement is what the author says about the topic. They state their opinion about the topic.
Where can you usually find a statement?
At the beginning of a text.
What type of details will the statement be backed by?
Supporting details. Details that back what the author says.
Why identify the author’s statement and topic first?
To know what kind of supporting details to look for. Look for what kind of details in the text support the statement. The statement will be supported by details.
How do supporting details work? What are they?
Supporting details describe. Supporting details describe the topic and give facts about a topic.
What is a descriptive passage?
A descriptive passage is a focused and detailed rich account of a specific topic. Therefore, you should be able to find a tad bit more supporting details in a descriptive passage.
