Q

What does the myelin sheath act as?

A

insulation for the nerve, preventing the electrical impulse from escaping the neuron

also speeds up process of action potential

Q

What are Nodes of Ranvier?

A

Crucial in allowing the propogation of the nerve impulse down the axon
Allows a jumping conduction of this nerve impulse

Q

What are glial cells’ roles?

A

Interact with neurons, act as support for the neurons with their function of communication within the nervous system

Q

What is the function of the astrocyte?

A

Purely supportive
Maintains chemical concentrations in the extracellular space
Has reparative functions - can repair and react to tissue damage
Contributes to the blood brain barrier - substances circulating blood cant enter cns at will - difficult passing the blood brain barrier (Separates the blood from the brain)
Removes waste

7
Q

What is the function of the Oligodendrocyte cell?

A

Insulates the axons, providing the myelin sheath around the axon.
Extends from the cell body to encapsulate multiple axon segments.

7
Q

What is the function of the satellite cell?

A

Supportive role (broad)
Surrounds sensory and autonomic ganglia in the PNS
These cells regulate the micro-environment of those ganglia in the PNS

Q

What is the function of the ependymal cell?

A

filter blood to make cerebrospinal fluid , fluid that flows thru cns lubricates neural structures and acts as a protective cushion for neural structures.
