the maximum amount of oxygen the body can utilize during intense exercise
artery
a blood vessel that brings oxygen-rich blood from the heart to all of the body’s cells

the ability to exercise the entire body for a long time without stopping
cardiovascular system
the system of the body comprised of the heart, blood vessels, and blood
cholesterol
a waxy, fat-like susbtance found in meat, dairy products, and egg yolk
fibrin
a substance involved in making blood clot
graded exercise test
a screening tool to track an individual’s fitness level
high-density lipoprotein (HDL)
a particle that is often referred to as “good cholesterol” because it carries excess cholesterol out of the bloodstream and into the liver for elimination from the body
lipoprotein
a particle that carries cholesterol through the bloodstream
low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
a particle that is often referred to as “bad cholesterol” because it carries cholesterol that is more likely to stay in the body and contribute to atherosclerosis
maximal oxygen uptake
the maximal amount of oxygen that the body can uptake and utilize and is the gold standard measure of exercise capacity
respiratory system
the system of the body comprised of the lungs and the air passages that bring air, including oxygen, to the lungs from outside of the body
vein
a blood vessel that carries blood filled with waste products from the muscle cells and other body tissues back to the heart
