anabolic steroid
synthetic drug that resembles the male hormone testosterone but that has health risks; it produces lean body mass, weight gain, and bone maturation

substance considered to be a steroid precursor because it is converted into anabolic steroids such as testosterone (male hormone) after it enters the body; also called andro
creatine
natural substance manufactured in the body by meat-eating animals including humans and needed in order for the body to perform anaerobic exercise, including many types of progressive resistance exercise
ergogenic aid
anything done to help you generate work or to increase your ability to do work, including performing vigorous exercise
ergolytic
term referring to substances that negatively affect performance (ergo meaning work, and lytic meaning destruction)
human growth hormone (HGH)
illegal drug that is exceptionally dangerous, especially for teens; causes premature closure of bones and can have deforming and even life-threatening effects
periodization
way of scheduling muscle fitness exercise in which you perform a given plan for a while, then alter it to perform different exercises or change the way you do your exercises
rhabdomyolysis
condition in which muscle fibers break down and the bloodstream absorbs muscle fiber elements
