Lesson 8 - Ducks Phase Model Flashcards
What does this model represent?
A breakdown of a relationship - when one or both members feel it’s not working.
What are the 4 phases of Ducks model?
- Intra-psychic processes
- Dyadic processes
- Social processes
- Grave dressing processes
What happens during intra-psychic processes?
Dissatisfied partner privately thinks about relationship and the problems they have. Dissatisfied partner focuses on fact they are under-benefitting from relationship
What happens during Dyadic processes?
Dissatisfied partner communicates with partner about them being dissatisfied. Both begin to think about investments in relationship, e.g. house, children. Reconciliation can happen if partner accepts validity of issues and they reach a compromise.
What happens during social processes?
If there is a break up, it is made public to family and friends. Advice is given from people and alliances form.
What happens during grave dressing processes?
As relationship dies a need to mourn and reflect is there. Ex partners create accounts of the breakup to keep up their social credit
What is a strength of Ducks phase model? (SET)
The social exchange theory supports it. If a relationship has high cost and low reward it would result in a breakdown.
What is a weakness of Ducks phase model? (Simple)
Model is over-simplified. Relationship break up is very unpredictable. It is very unrealistic to think a breakup can be reduced to 4 basic stages. Leads to questions being asked about how applicable it is IRL.
What is another weakness of Ducks phase model? (Kaizen)
Kassin found females break up due to unhappiness, lack of emotional support but men for a lack of sex and/or fun, Ducks model disregards gender differences.
What is another strength of DPM? (Improved)
Model was devised in 1982. However improvements have been made. Duck teamed up with Rollie in 2006 to add 5th stage - Resurrection stage. This is where person engages in personal growth and prepares for new relationships.
