Lesson 2 - Self disclosure Flashcards
What is self disclosure?
The revealing of personal, intimate information to another person
Who introduced the idea of self disclosure?
Altman and Taylor, theory states that gradual revealing enables couples to get closer.
What factors affect the success of self disclosure?
Appropriateness (first date not appropriate)
Reason for self disclosure
Gender differences (man threatened by women sex history)
Content (intimate info too soon)
What is a strength?(A AND T)
Altman and Taylor found that self-disclosure on first date is inappropriate and doesn’t increase attraction
What is another strength?(KITO)
Kito investigated Japanese and American students in different types of relationships. Found self-disclosure was high for both. Shows it to be cross-cultural
What is a weakness?
Attraction is not sole dependent on self-disclosure. Other factors are involved
What is another weakness? (Sprecher)
Sprecher found that level of self disclosure is the best predictor of affection, rather than amount of self disclosure. This goes against the idea of reciprocal self disclosure.
Reciprocal self-disclosure =
Idea that someone expects the same amount of self-disclosure as they give.
