What is satisfaction determined by?

A

The positive and negative experiences in a relationship. Also influenced by the extent to which their partner fulfils their needs.

What is alternatives determined by?

A

If there is an attractive alternative, one may be inclined to leave for them and thus have lower commitment.

What is investment determined by?

A

Amount of investment put in. 2 types of investment:
1. Intrinsic which refers to resources put into relationship (e.g. effort)
2. Extrinsic which refers to resources rising from the relationship (e.g. children)

A

Research conducted by Van Lange supports model. He studied couples from Taiwan and the Netherlands and found evidence that high commitment levels in a relationship were related to high satisfaction, low quality of alternatives and high investment size.
