What is the equity theory?

A

An economic model based on the idea of fairness for each partner. Emphasises the need for each partner to experience a balance between their cost/effort and their balance/reward.

How do problems occur according to the theory?

A

If the balance is unfair then problems can occur. If someone over-benefits they might feel guilty. If someone under-benefits they might feel sad.

Can an imbalance be fine?

A

If both parties accept the situation. E.g. if one partner has recently lost their job

What is a strength of the Equity theory?

A

DeMaris studied 1500 US couples. He found that if women were over-benefiting to a high degree, then there was a high risk of divorce. This shows importance to women

What is another strength of the Equity theory?

A

Brosnan found that female monkeys became angry if they didn’t revise a prize for playing a game with a researcher, particularly if they saw another monkey who had NOT played receive one. Shows idea of equity is embedded in our ancient roots.

What is a weakness of the Equity theory?

A

Mills and Clark criticised equity theory. Said not possible to asses equity in loving relationships, as many of the costs/rewards are psychological and thus can’t be quantified. Measuring reward and cost can also diminish quality of love, which can be damaging.
