Lesson 6 - Equity Theory Flashcards
What is the equity theory?
An economic model based on the idea of fairness for each partner. Emphasises the need for each partner to experience a balance between their cost/effort and their balance/reward.
How do problems occur according to the theory?
If the balance is unfair then problems can occur. If someone over-benefits they might feel guilty. If someone under-benefits they might feel sad.
Can an imbalance be fine?
If both parties accept the situation. E.g. if one partner has recently lost their job
What is a strength of the Equity theory?
DeMaris studied 1500 US couples. He found that if women were over-benefiting to a high degree, then there was a high risk of divorce. This shows importance to women
What is another strength of the Equity theory?
Brosnan found that female monkeys became angry if they didn’t revise a prize for playing a game with a researcher, particularly if they saw another monkey who had NOT played receive one. Shows idea of equity is embedded in our ancient roots.
What is a weakness of the Equity theory?
Mills and Clark criticised equity theory. Said not possible to asses equity in loving relationships, as many of the costs/rewards are psychological and thus can’t be quantified. Measuring reward and cost can also diminish quality of love, which can be damaging.
