Lesson 8: Creating and Configuring Virtual Machine Storage Flashcards
VHD
Virtual Hard Drive file
3 types of VHD files
Fixed hard disk image
Dynamic hard disk image
Differencing hard disk image
Fixed hard disk image
The image file is the maximum size of the virtual hard drive at the time of creation. If you create an 8GB VHD, the file will be 8GB at creation.
Dynamic Hard Disk image
Has a set max size but starts off small. Takes up only as much space as it needs, up to the max size. Efficient for HD space, but not processing as you lose efficiencies to dynamic expansion.
Differencing hard disk image
Child image file associated with a specific parent image. System writes all changes made on the parent image file to the child image to facilitate a rollback.
Max size of a VHD
2TB
Max size of VHDX
64TB
VHDX are not `
Backwards compatible from Server 2012
Pass-through disks
A type of virtual disk that points to an entire physical drive connected to the host
SAN
Storage Area Network. Network dedicated to high-speed connections between servers and storage devices
Fibre Channel
High speed serial networking technology for SANs. Older technology. Not fiber.
