Q

what is procedural memory

A

concerned with motor skills and actions
acquired through repetition and practice
resistant to forgetting and amnesia
automatic
stored in the cerebellum

Q

evaluation of types of long term memory

A

(+) evidence from amnesia patients - unable to store new episode/semantic but procedural is unaffected
(+) evidence from brain scans - pps recall info, different areas of brain active on fMRI
(+) cases of brain damage - Clive Wearing, viral infection affected hippocampus, no episodic memory, no new semantic but procedural is intact
(-) research is on individual patients, isolated cases, cannot be generalised
