Lesson 3 + 4 - the multi-store model of memory Flashcards
who developed the multi-store model of memory
atkinson and shiffrin
what kind of system is the MSM
unitary system
follows a linear path
how many memory stores are in the MSM and how are they linked
3 memory stores
linked by transfer processes
what are the 3 memory stores
sensory register
short term memory
long term memory
how is the SR coded
iconic-echoic
how is STM coded
acoustically
how is LTM coded
semantically
how do memories move into the SR
through environmental stimuli
how do memories move from SR to STM
by paying attention to the memory
how do memories move from the STM to LTM
through elaborative rehearsal
how are memories moved from the LTM to the STM
through memory retrieval
capacity of the SR
large
capacity of STM
7 +/- 2 items
capacity of LTM
unlimited
how long do memories remain in the SR
milliseconds
how long do memories remain in the STM
18-30 seconds
how long do memories remain in the LTM
infinite
2 strengths of MSM
- scoville: treat a patient called HM, removing different brain areas, patient could not code new LTM but STM was unaffected
- murdock: pps recall long list of words, words at beginning (primacy effect) and end better than those at the end(recency effect) (serial position effect)
2 weaknesses of MSM
- oversimplified: different types of STM, several types of LTM
- baddeley and hitch say MSM doesn’t explain multitasking: one STM means multi-tasking is impossible but people do it all the time e.g. listening to radio and driving
