An extremely depressed mood state that lasts at least 2 weeks and includes cognitive symptoms and disturbed physical functions to the point that even the slightest activity or movement requires an overwhelming effort
major depressive episode
Loss of energy and inability to engage in pleasurable activities or have any “fun”
Anhedonia
Abnormally exaggerated elation, joy, or euphoria
Mania
A less severe version of a manic episode that does not cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning and need last only 4 days rather than a full week
hypomanic episode
Individuals who experience either depression or mania
unipolar mood disorder
presence of depression and the absence of manic, or hypomanic episodes, before or during the disorder.
major depressive disorder
A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased goal directed activity or energy, lasting at least 1 week and present most of the day, nearly every day
Criteria for Manic Episode
Depressed mood that continues at least 2 years, during which the patient cannot be symptom free for more than 2 months at a time even though they may not experience all of the symptoms of a major depressive episode
Persistent depressive disorder
Having both major depressive episodes and persistent depression with fewer symptoms
double depression
A depressive episode that begins in the late fall and ends with the beginning of spring. These episodes must have occurred for at least two years with no evidence of nonseasonal major depressive episodes occurring during that period of time.
seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
Severe recurrent temper outburst manifested verbally and/or behaviorally that are grossly out of proportion in intensity or duration to the situation or provocation.
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder
major depressive episodes alternate with hypomanic episodes rather than full manic episodes.
bipolar II disorder
major depressive episodes alternate with full manic episodes.
bipolar I disorder
A chronic alternation of mood elevation and depression that does not reach the severity of manic or major depressive episodes
cyclothymic disorder
An episode of mania coupled with anxiety or depression
mixed episode
