Q

Describe good conditions for HEP

A

• Large areas of moving water
• Long, steep-sided valley for good gradient and narrow exit for efficient water collection
• Rain

Q

Explain formation of coal

A

• Accumulation of organic debris buried under layers of sediment for millions of years
• Decomposition of debris slowed down due to anaerobic conditions
• Overtime, more heat and pressure applied which causes coalification

6
Q

Explain formation of gas and oil

A

• Organic material buried at bottom of sea
• Overtime, more heat and pressure, gradually forming oil and under more extreme conditions, gas
• Increasing pressure forces gas upwards into porous rock and eventually trapped at cap rock (impermeable rock)
• Reservoir of oil and gas formed at cap rock
