Lesson 1 Flashcards
Name 8 sources of energy
Fossil fuels, nuclear, biomass, HEP, solar, wind
What is the difference between primary and secondary energy?
Primary comes directly from a natural form of a resource whereas secondary comes from primary energy
Name 3 secondary resources
Electricity, petrol, diesel
What is a critical-renewable resource?
Resources that can be sustainable but require careful management when utilised (i.e wood)
Describe a reserve of a resource
Part of a resource that is available for use under existing economic development and technology
What is resource security?
Ability of a country to safeguard a reliable and sustainable flow of resources while maintaining social and economic development
Describe difference between flow and stock resource
Flow is resource which replenishes under a relatively short amount of time whereas stock is finite and takes millions of years to generate naturally
How can a resource be recyclable?
By converting waste materials into new ones to prevent waste of useful materials and to reduce consumption of newer raw resources
Describe process of natural resource development
• Exploration - Process of searching an area for natural resources
• Exploitation - Action of extracting and using natural resources for the most profitable use
• Development - Action of refining, distribution, marketing and sales of a resource
What factors could affect if a resource is exploited?
Government policies, quantity of a reserve, accessibility of a resource, impact on environment, demand of resource/market price, profit margins
