Lesson 12 Flashcards
What is combined heat and power?
• CHP generates electricity by capturing usable heat
• Combines older large-scale power plants which lose 66% of energy due to long transport
• With new ones which are smaller-scale so less transport needs
• This reduces CO2 emissions
• New plants 90% efficiency whereas old ones only 45%
How have smart meters affected energy consumption
• Smart meters show gas and electricity consumption
• Allows better awareness of energy usage, encouraging people to use less
• UK has aimed for smart meters in every home and business but by 2020 only 50% was reached
What are Hive and nest systems?
• Allow heating to be controlled digitally
• Learns from your habits and automatically detects your presence
• Very expensive though
What is the EPC?
Energy performance certificate which is issued when property is constructed and sold and gives a rating of A-G based of energy usage efficiency
How can it change energy consumption?
• Improves awareness of importance of energy
• People are more likely to buy homes with better ratings because it means lower bills
• Encourages homes to be constructed to be more energy efficient
• Also applied to electronic products
• Products with better ratings because it tend to be more expensive though
How has usage of cars changed for less energy consumption?
• Organisations have encourage employees to share but only applies if people live nearby
• Lanes dedicated for vehicles with multiple passengers with 37% more people in buses in this lane
• £11.50 charge for driving in dedicated zone between 6-7pm
• Reduced congestion by 26% in 2006
How are buses better than cars for energy consumption?
• Buses can have many people which reduces car usage
• Designated bus lanes for faster travel encourages to use bus instead of car
• This reduces congestion
• Some buses are hybrid buses and have rechargeable batteries which uses less CO2
How is cycling changing for energy conservation?
• Dedicated cycling lanes and support safe travel which encourages people to use bikes
• Self-service bike scheme where people can rent a bike for £2
• Has achieved 90000 users with 11million rides in London is first 10 weeks
How has car design changed?
• Manufacturers designing cars to be more efficient with hybrid engines or fully electric cars which also reduces carbon emissions
• High road tax for high emission cars
• Petrol/diesel cars banned in UK by 2035, encouraging more electric cars to be designed by brands
