The amount obligatory to know about the messenger ﷺ stands on 2 pillars. What are they?
- man in him-Believing in him ﷺ. And learn what will either reduce or eliminate believing in him (nullifiers of that)
- Obeying him- and this is with regards to the Shariah.
Evidence for the first pillar of what is obligatory to know about the messenger ﷺ
-

> O you who have believed, fear Allāh and believe in His Messenger; He will [then] give you a double portion of His mercy and make for you a light by which you will walk and forgive you; and Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

> Or did they not know their Messenger, so they are toward him disacknowledging?- So believing in him ﷺ, in his prophecies etc is a pillar from the pillars of Islam.

> Allah raised among us a man of whose birth, truthfulness, honesty, and purity we were acknowledged,- The companions followed him because they knew who he was. As such the scholars say knowing him ﷺ and having understanding of him ﷺ will have a direct effect on your obedience to him and the belief of him.

Evidence for the second pillar of what is obligatory to know about the messenger ﷺ
> Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often.
Said studying his eating, drinking, how he lived with his family, his prayer, his sleep will affect your obedience to him ﷺ and your love towards him ﷺ.
The amount recommended to know about the biography of the messenger ﷺ and some examples
- anything beyond the first 2.
- Ibn Abbas used to sit with the senior companions of the Muhajireen and Ansar and ask about the expeditions and battles of the messenger ﷺ, and the scholars took from this that a young person/youth/child (Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه was 13) should learn more than what’s sufficient as this will also increase your Imam in him and your love and obedience to him
