Lesson 6- The Nervous System Flashcards
central nervous system
coordinates info to pns. consists of nerves of brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system
nerves outside of brain and spinal cord. relaying info between cns and rest of body. voluntary; somatic and relays sensory and motor info, involuntary; autonomic and relays info between internal organs and cns
nerve cells
glial cells (schwann) and neurons
glial cells
non-conductory; insulate and protect organs, supply neurons with oxygen and nutrients, facilitate transmission of nervous impulses. divide to replace damaged cells
schwann cells
form tightly wrapped layers of plasma membrane (myelin sheaths), speed up messaging, and have gaps (node of ranvier)
neurons
conducting cells; made up of enlarged cell body, dendrites and exons. divided into three groups; sensory, inter, and motor.
dendrites
projection carries signals toward the cell body (branched, multiple for lots of signals)
axons
extenstion that carries nerve signals away from cell body
covered with myelin sheath and axon hillock
sensory neurons
carry info from sensory receptors to cns
interneurons
major component of cns that relay info from sensory neurons to motor neurons
motor neurons
carry info from the cns to effectors (muscles organs and glands)
reflex arc
neural circuits that travek through spinal cord for don’t need brain coordination. reflex actions like putting a hand on a hot stove
