Forms of Contracted Prounouns
Pronouns take on different forms when contracted with other words. Mwen, ou and li are the prounouns contracted most commonly. An apostrophe should come between words being contracted together. Frequently though, the apostrophe is dropped - this can make reading a little challenging at first.
Mwen - M Ou - W Li - L Nou - N Yo - Y
Rule of Thumb for when to contract prounouns
As a general rule, the words being contracted with the pronoun needs to maintain it’s original syllable count. For this reason it is easiest (most common) to contract words ending in a vowel or blend with the pronoun following or words beginning with a vowel or blend with the pronoun preceding it.
kouzen (2 syllables) - kouzen ‘m (still 2 syllables)
kouzin (2 syllables) - kouzin ‘m (because it ends in a consonant contracting changes it to 3 syllables - MAY NOT contract)
achte 2 syllables - l’ achte (still 2 syllables)
di - 1 syllable - l’ di (2 syllables and doesn’t roll off right)
Special rules from mwen contractions
Mwen can usually be contracted at the beginning of a sentence regardless of whether or not it is followed by a word beginning with a consonant or blend. You kind of just swallow the last of mwen. (Sometimes people do this with nou as well)
M’ vle - I want
M’ rele - I call
M’ di - I say
2 Special Contractions (avèk and bay)
Avèk and bay are frequently contracted with mwen, ou and li to make one new word. In the case of bay you conjugate it first and then contract the conjugated form with the pronoun.
avèm or avè ‘m - with me
avèw or avè ‘w - with you
avèl or avè ‘l - with him/her/it
ban mwen - ban ‘m - give me
ba li - ba ‘l - give him/her/it
ba ou - ba ‘w - give you
