Haitian uses of house vs. home
When Haitians talk about their house (the object) they use kay. When they talk about house as a gathering/hosting place they use the word lakay.
Some examples:
We fixed our house - Nou te ranje kay nou.
Our friends came to our house - Zanmi n te vini lakay nou.
Clarifications on using the English word “some”
kèk nan - some of (use this when you want several or a few of a quantifiable object)
ex: Banm kèk nan pòm yo - Give me some apples
yon moso - a piece of or a part of a single item
ex: Banm yon moso pen - give me some (a piece of) bread
yon pati - a part or portion of something
ex: Te fè lapli nan yon pati Port-au-Prince - It rained in a part of (in some of) Port-au-Prince
Yon ti - a little of (use this when you want a portion of a larger item like water or rice)
ex: M vle yon ti dlo OR W vle yon ti diri - I want a little (some) water OR You want a little (some) rice
When you are making general statements about unspecific groups use GEN DE
For example: Some people are mean. Some places are boring. Some things are scary.
