What is the working memory model?
Baddeley and hitch questioned the multi store model of memory that people only have one type of stm and that they argued that stm is far more complex than simply being a temporary store for information before being transferred to LTM.
They instead saw STM as an active store holding several pieces of information while they are being worked on. They argued that LTM is the passive store that only holds previously leaned material to be used by stm when needed
What is the central executive?
It drives the whole working memory system and allocates data to specific components best suited for that information, called slave systems. CE also deals with cognitive tasks such as mental arithmetic, reasoning and problem solving. Individuals also have a limited attention capacity. Some tasks are automated,to make less attentional demands on the CE, leaving us free to perform other tasks.
A person who has drive for 10 years Will find that driving is automated task and does not need many attentional demands, compared to when they were learning to drive, and so now they can listen to the radio or talk to passengers much more easily than a learner can,
What is the phonological loop?
Component of the working memory model that deals with spoken and written material with 2 sub components:
Phonological Store:
- sometimes referred to as the inner ear and it is linked to speech perception and holds speech based info for 1-2 seconds
Articulatory Loop:
- sometimes referred to as inner voice and is linked to speech production and to rehearse and store verbal information from the phonological store, allowing for maintenance rehearsal.
What is the visuo spatial sketch pad?
Stores and processes info in the visual and spatial form. It is used for navigation and is sometimes referred to as inner eye. It also has 2 sub components!
Visual Cache:
- Stores visual information about form and colour
Inner scribe
- handles spatial relationships
What is the episodic buffer?
Baddeley added the episodic buffer because he realised the model needed a general storage component to operate properly. The slave systems only process and have temporary storage roles of specific types of info and the central exec has no storage at all.
Episodic buffer is a limited capacity store that holds information from central exec, phon loop, visuo spatial sketch as well as from LTM
