Evaluation Working Memory Midel Flashcards
Neurobiological evidence?
+ Shallice and Warrington reported the case study of KF, who because of a motorbike accident, had a reduced stm for verbally presented information, but not for visually presented information. Suggesting there is more than one type of stm as thr WMM suggests. Specifically, it shows that we have an STM for verbal tasks (phon loop) and for visual tasks (visuo spatial sketch pad)
Laboratory experiments:
+ Baddeley and hitch gave participants a dual task. They were asked to complete a reasoning task which features thr CE whilst simultaneously doing a reading aloud task which uses the pho loop. Participants could do both at the same time very well, supporting sepesrte stms
+Baddeley gave participants a brief visual representation of lists of words. These could be long or short words. Participants were then asked to recall the lists immediately straight after in the correct order. It was found participants could recall the shorter ones more than the long ones. Baddeley called this the word length effect and supports the idea that the phonological loop can hold unlimited info for 1.5-2 seconds than being held back by the 7(+/-2) pieces of info that the MSM argues
General Evalution
WMM has practical applications; it has improved out understanding of how people learn to read and so it has helped psychologists assist those with dyslexia who struggle to read and write
Many psychologists criticise the WMM as they think the idea of a CE is vague and untestable. Damasio presented case of EVR who had his cerebral tumour removed. He had good reasoning skills which suggested that his CE intact but he could not make decisions suggesting his CE was damaged. This case study indicates the the CE is far more complex than the WMM claims
