Evaluation Multi Store Model Flashcards
Neurobiological Evidence
+Scollfive tried to treat a yute called HM with epilepsy by removing several areas of the brain, including hippocampus. As a consequence he couldn’t code new LTM but his stm was largely unaffected. Supports the idea of distinct STM and LTM.
+ Shallixe and Warrington reported the case of KF, who as a result of a motorbike accident had reduced STM capacity of only one or two digits, however his LTM was normal. Supporting thr idea of sepesrte STM and LTM. However KF only had reduced stm for verbal tasks and not visual tasks, suggesting more than one type of stm, contradicting the MSM. As well as that, according to the MSM, if the STM gets damaged then it should be difficult to retrieve LTM, however KF could access LTM without difficulty.
Lab experiments
+ Murdock presented participants with a long list of words to be recalled in any order, (free recall experiment) words at beginning and end were recalled better thsn those in the middle. This is the serial position effect: Words at the beginning and of the list get recalled better because they have been constantly rehearsed and transferred to LTM. While words at the end have been recalled because they are still in stm - recency effect. Supports distance LTM and STM.
General evaluation
- MSM oversimplified assuming that there is only one type of STM and LTM. Researdh has indicated several types of stm, such as one for verbal info and one for non verbal info. (Phonological loop and visuo spatial sketch pad). Research also indicates several types of LTM: Episodic, semantic, procedural
- baddeley and hitch claimed that MSM couldn’t explain the ability to multi task; if there is only one stm, then multi tasking would not be possible. However people multi task all the time, like listening to music whilst driving
