Lesson 1 - memory Flashcards
What is memory?
Memory is the process of retaining learned information and accessing this information when it is needed.
What is coding?
The way memory is changed so it can be stored in memory
What is storage?
Keeping information within the memory system until it is needed
What is retrieval?
Recovering information stored in the memory system when it is needed
What is sensory register?
SR contains raw unprocessed impressions of information received through all 5 senses. There is a separate store for each sensory input. For example iconic store for visual information and echoed for auditory information
What is Short Term Memory
A temporary store for information received from the SR
What is long term memory
A permanent store, which holds limitless amounts of information for long periods of time, potentially a lifetime.
How do STM and LTM differ?
They differ in terms of coding, capacity and duration and how info is lost
What is capacity?
The amount of info that can be held in memory before new information displaces it.
What is duration
How long information can be held,in memory before it’s lost due to decay
