What was the NAACPs aims/beliefs?
-To encourage all races to protest against discrimination
-Gain support from moderate whites
-Raise awareness amongst southern blacks
-challange racial unfairness through publicity and the courts

What were their legal successes?
They got rid of the ‘Grandfather Clause’ in the Supreme Court in 1915
Got the House of Representatives to vote in favour of passing anti-lynching bills in 1937 and 1940 (stopped in senate)
1941- sponsored a National Committee to Abolish the Poll Tax
1954: Brown vs Board of Education in Topeka

Factors that acted against the NAACP
- Jim Crow Laws remained in the south
- black urban poverty (run down ghettoes)
- black workers were not members of trade unions so could not challenge unfair working conditions
- many blacks lacked political knowledge
- southern blacks were threatened by the KKK
