Lesson 5: Homeostasis and Feedback Systems Flashcards
An organism’s process of maintaining a stable internal environment suitable for sustaining life
Homeostasis
The normal value of a controlled condition
Set point
The normal range of values of a controlled condition
Set ranges
The upper and lower values of the range of a set point
Normal limits
A kind of monitoring and responding mechanism to changes in the condition of the body, such as blood glucose levels, temperature, or blood pressure
Feedback systems
A system that keeps repeating its signals till the controlled condition is brought back to within the normal limits of its set point range (ex. thermoregulation, shivering of the body in cold temp, sweating during extreme summer, regulation of blood sugar)
Negative feedback system
A system that repeats its feedback until the original stimulus is removed (ex. increasing uterine contraction once labor starts and clotting of blood following an injury)
Positive feedback system
When equilibrium of the internal environment is disturbed within the body
Homeostatic imbalance
