Bronchoscopy
Visual examination of the bronchi using a bronchoscope. [bronch/o (bronchus) + -scopy (direct visual examination)]
Polysomnography
Also known as a sleep study. Measures physiological activity during sleep and often performed to detect nocturnal defects in breathing associated with sleep apnea. [poly- (many) + somn/o (sleep) + -graphy (the process of recording)]
Spirometer
A recording device that measures the amount (volume) of air inhaled or exhaled and the length of time required for each breath. [spir/o (to breathe) + -meter (to measure)]
Antitussive
Commonly known as cough medicine, administered to prevent or relieve coughing. [anti- (against) + tuss (cough) + -ive (performs)]
Bronchodilator
An inhaled medication that relaxes and expands the bronchial passages into the lung.
Nebulizer
An electronic device that pumps air or oxygen through a liquid medicine to turn it into a mist, which the patient then inhales via a face mask or mouthpiece.
Endotracheal intubation
The passage of a tube through the mouth into the trachea to establish or maintain an open airway, especially when a patient must be placed on a ventilator. [endo- (within) + trache/o (trachea) + -al (pertaining to)]
Laryngotomy
A surgical incision into the larynx. [laryng/o (larynx) + -otomy (surgical incision)]
Septoplasty
The surgical repair of parts of the nasal septum. [sept/o (septum) + -plasty (surgical repair)]
Tracheostomy
The surgical creation of a stoma into the trachea below the vocal cords to insert a temporary or permanent tube to facilitate breathing. [trache/o (trachea) + -ostomy (surgical creation of an opening)]
Pneumonectomy
The surgical removal of all or part of a lung. [pneumon/o (lung) + -ectomy (surgical removal)]
Thoracentesis
The surgical puncture of the chest wall with a needle to obtain fluid from the pleural cavity. [thor/a (thorax or chest) + -centesis (surgical puncture to remove fluid)]
Thoracotomy
A surgical incision into the chest wall to open the pleural cavity for biopsy or treatment. [thorac/o (chest) + -otomy (surgical incision)]
