Lesson 5 Flashcards
What do Environmental Performance Indicators (EPIs) provide?
a way of measuring the output and efficiency of complex systems.
What 3 things do EPIs assist in?
- measuring efficiency
- making savings as a result of improvement to efficiency
- ensuring legal compliance
What goal has the government set water companies?
reduce leaks by 50% by 2025
To work towards the target set by the government for water companies, what must they do?
- use data from reservoirs to work out how much water is being sent out
- use meter readings and industry reporting to monitor how much water is being used.
What does carbon capture stop?
CO2 from being released, and either reuses it or stores it
carbon capture can either be…….or……?
- natural
- use carbon capture technology
How much CO2 has the government set to capture and by when?
20 and 30 million tonnes of CO2 a year by 2030
What 3 species targets have been set by the government?
- Improve species abundance by 10% by 2042, compared to 2022 levels.
- Improve the Great Britain Red List Index (RLI) (England) for species extinction risk by 2042, compared to 2022 levels.
- Increase tree and woodland cover from 14.5% to 17.5% of total land area in England by 2050.
What percentage of all water is used in the UK as a result of farming?
90-93%
What can poor water quality lead to?
eutrophication and disease
What is eutrophication?
the gradual increase in phosphorous, nitrogen and other plant nutrients in a body of water
What 3 targets have been put in place to improve water quality?
- reducing nitrogen, phosphorous and sediment from agriculture to the water environment by 40% by 2037
- cutting sewage discharge to ‘high priority’ areas by 75% by 2035
- setting limits to particulate matter by 2040 compared to 2018, with a target of 35% reduction in people exposed to PM2.5 (a particulate smaller than a human hair) by 2040
What can soil and water testing be apart of?
farm and land management
What can affect what plants and crops are able to grow in an area?
chemical balances of pH and nutrients
Correct measurements of chemicals is crucial to what?
agricultural success or failure, as well as to any flora and fauna that depend on certain levels of quality in soil and water habitats.
What does SECR stand for?
Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting
What does SECR require?
large UK companies to disclose their energy use, carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions in their annual financial reporting.
SECR applies to companies with what 3 things?
- turnover (or gross income) of £36 million or more
- balance sheet assets of £18 million or more
- 250 employees or more
What does SDR stand for?
Sustainability Disclosure Requirements
What is SDR?
An annual sustainability requirement introduced in 2023, requiring:
- full reporting
- additional non-climate sustainability disclosure
- a detailed plan outlining the submitter’s path to net zero
