What are the 2 types of pollution?
- Point source pollution
- Diffuse source pollution
What is point source pollution?
traceable to a single release point (eg leaking silage)
What is diffuse source pollution?
no specific point of origin (eg washing-off over fertilised fields)
What are the effects of air pollution?
- Poor air quality for humans and animals
- Climate change
- Reduced plant growth
What are the effects of water pollution?
- Reduced biodiversity in rivers
- Poor quality drinking water
What are the consequences for biodiversity of pollution?
- Loss of rare species
- Increase in pest species
- Limiting of genetic diversity
What does the OEP do?
identifies and responds to serious failures to comply with environmental law by government and anyone elsecarrying out activities of a public nature.
What does the Environment Agency (EA) aim to do?
- stop illegal activity from occurring or continuing
- put right environmental harm or damage, also known as restoration or remediation
- bring illegal activity under regulatory control, and so in compliance with the law
- punish offenders and deter future offending
What can prosecutions result in?
fines such as fixed penalties as well as ‘variable money penalties’.
What can serious breaches result in?
imprisonment
