What is collective bargaining?
Where employees bargain as a group (called a labor union) for better wages and working conditions.
What are closed shop and open shop (or right to work) states?
Closed shop states require certain workers to be part of a union. Open shop states do not require membership of a union.
What factors have contributed to a decreasing rate of union memberships among American workers?
- businesses paid non-union workers the same as union workers
- White collar workers wanted to be dealt with as individuals
- worker rights and safety became protected by the government
- businesses moved to open shop status.
What are the largest and strongest unions currently?
unions for government workers
What has been the effect of labor unions on wage rates?
It raised them above market equilibrium.
How have unions affected non-union wages?
It lowered them.
What was the general position of unions toward blacks through the 1940’s?
They weren’t allowed to join.
Where does Ernest van den Haag say the money for higher wages comes from?
higher prices, higher productivity and government action.
How do unions monopolize or restrict the supply or labor?
By restricting union membership while compelling employers to hire only union members and by threatening to strike.
What does van den Haag believe about strikes by government workers or public employees?
They should not be allowed to strike w/out facing penalties.
