Lesson 402 Flashcards
MATS ACC > Glossary
STAR
Standard Terminal Arrival: An IFR ATC arrival procedure published in the Canada Air Pilot (CAP) for pilot and controller use.
MATS ACC > Glossary
TRANSITION
A published procedure used to connect the basic standard instrument (SID) to
one or more enroute airways or to connect one or more enroute airways to the
basic standard terminal arrival (STAR). More than one transition may be
published in the associated SID or STAR or RNAV approach.
MATS ACC > Glossary
WAYPOINT
A specified geographical location, defined by longitude and latitude that is used in
the definition of routes and terminal segments and for progress-reporting
purposes.
MATS ACC > ATS Surveillance > Vectoring
Allow aircraft operating on SIDs, STARs, and RNAV routes to conduct their own
navigation to the ____________.
extent possible
STAR CONVENTIONNELLE
STAR PBN.

RNAV STAR
An IFR ATC arrival procedure coded in an aircraft FMS database and published in
graphic and textual form for use by aircraft that are appropriately equipped and
authorized.
MATS ACC > Traffic Management > Arrivals > RNAV STAR
For an aircraft operating on an RNAV STAR:
■
■
■
—
—
■ Allow the aircraft to conduct its own navigation to the extent possible.
■ If necessary, issue appropriate joining instructions to reroute the aircraft to
another STAR or STAR transition.
■ If you initiate vectors or otherwise amend the aircraft’s routing, advise the
pilot of:
— The status of the STAR.
— What to expect.
MATS ACC > Glossary
DOWNWIND TERMINATION WAYPOINT (DTW)
The waypoint located downwind to the landing runway abeam the final approach course fix (FACF) where an open RNAV STAR terminates.
MATS ACC > Glossary (Review)
FINAL APPROACH COURSE FIX (FACF)
A fix and/or waypoint located at any of the following points on the final approach
course of an instrument approach procedure (IAP):
(a) prior to the point of glide path (GP) intercept on a precision approach
procedure;
(b) prior to the final approach fix (FAF) on a non-precision approach
procedure that has a designated FAF;
(c) prior to any stepdown fixes on a non-precision approach procedure
with designated fixes but no FAF; or
(d) at a point that would permit a normal landing approach on a nonprecision
approach procedure with no FAF or stepdown fixes
MATS ACC > Traffic Management > Arrivals > RNAV STAR
Consider an aircraft to have been cleared for the RNAV STAR provided the STAR is included in the ______ portion of the ________.
NOTE;
- There is no requirement to re-clear an aircraft for an RNAV STAR if its cleared routing includes the appropriate STAR
- Clearance for the STAR permits the aircraft to follow lateral track only, descent clearance must be received from ___.

MATS ACC > Glossary
CLOSED RNAV STAR
A STAR that terminates at the Final Approach Course Fix (FACF).; normally used
when the inbound track is within plus or minus 90 degrees, of the final approach
course, to the runway.
TC AIM RAC 9.2.3.10
A closed STAR
procedure is normally used when the inbound track is within ______________ of the final approach course to the runway.
plus
or minus 90°
MATS ACC > Glossary
OPEN RNAV STAR
A STAR that terminates at a Downwind Termination Waypoint (DTW). Normally
used for aircraft approaching the airport via the downwind leg to the DTW.
TC AIM RAC
Open STARs
are charted with an expectation of radar vectors and essentially
place aircraft in a downwind to simplify approach sequencing. A
STAR can be linked to an approach once ATC has issued an
approach clearance.
…
MATS ACC > Traffic Management > Arrivals > RNAV STAR > Open STAR
If an aircraft is flying an open STAR, issue one of the following:
■
■
■
■
NOTE;
- Clearance for visual approach automatically cancels the RNAV STAR.
- The phrase STRAIGHT IN may be omitted, as it is part of the RNAV procedure.
■ Approach clearance at least 3 miles prior to the DTW (Figure: Open RNAV
Procedure).
■ Vectors to intercept the final approach course
■ Clearance direct to the FACF from any point downwind of the DTW.
■ Further clearance or instructions as required.
