Lesson 4: pH, Acids, Bases, and Buffers Flashcards
What are indicators?
They are compounds that reveal pH level with a change in colour.
What do acids release when dissolved in water?
H^+ ions
Why is Ch3COOH an acid?
Acids with a carbon usually have the C written first.
How do you name an acid that ends in ide
Hydro prefix than ic at the end with acid.
How do you name an acid that ends in ite
No hydro just ends in ous then acid
Ex. Sulphurous acid
How do you name an acid that ends in ate
No hydro ic at the end then acid
Ex. Carbonic acid
Why can you not have a high [H^+ (aq)] and high [OH^- (aq]?
They will cancel each other out and from water. This process is called neutralization.
What is a buffer?
A chemical or combination of chemicals that can take up H+ ions and OH- ions. Keep pH at a constant level. Buffers resist changes in pH when an acid or base is added.
Why can acids and bases conduct electricity?
They release ions in solutions.
Acids release H+ ions
Bases release OH- ions
What happens if pH changes?
It can cause enzymes to denature.
