Lesson 3: User Experience Planning Flashcards
Why do we make a plan?
Every project has a budget and timescale to meet, so the UX team needs to be able to offer a solid plan to show how they will spend their budget, and how they will keep their project on track to meet the deadline, and how they will do this whilst adding the most value to the project as possible.
When do we plan?
It depends on the role. A UX consultancy will start a plan as you write proposals to woo clients. An In-House team starts by synching schedules with their dev team & product team to ensure that UX is the first consideration,
How do I plan?
- If you know the budget and the timescale, planning can be easier.
- If your potential client asks you to suggest a methodology, timescale, and budget you need to create multiple plans for different price points and levels of UX Design.
What are the three phases to make a good/structured plan?
- Research Phase
- Design Phase
- Validation Phase
What do you do in the Research Phase?
• Develop the background: Determine the business needs, your users, and also the client’s competition.
What do you do in the Design Phase?
- In this phase, you decide what you will design, how it might work, and how that will come together.
- You define the project scope, functional specification, etc.
What do you do in the Validation Phase?
In this phase, you test your design with your users and ensure that you achieved the objectives you defined.
What are some constraints that you might run into during the project?
- Budget availability
- Time constraints
- The deadline for project completion
- Resource constraints
- Any conflicting interests/projects within the team
- Availability of specific tools or hardware configurations
- Any legal requirements.
What’s the most important thing when planning a UX project?
Involving the User
What are the benefits of UX?
- Products will meet the user’s needs
- Products will require less tinkering after release
- Products which are less risky to the business’s reputation
- Products will be relatively immune to scope creep
- Products will be more competitive
- Lower costs to the business of product development
- Customer Satisfaction
Which of the following is an indirect benefit of UX work to a client?
a. Products that require less tinkering after release
b. Products which are competitive
c. Increased customer satisfaction with the business
c. Increased customer satisfaction with the business
Why does UX minimize risk to a business’s reputation?
UX is a quality measure. When you release products that users love to use and that meet their needs; your business reputation will grow. Conversely if you don’t get things right - your reputation will fall.
How does UX allow businesses to meet the user’s needs?
If your users are involved in the design process then your final product should meet their needs. That should deliver a more commercially viable offering and thus higher levels of profit for the company.
How does UX ensure that products will require less thinkering after its release?
t’s cheaper and easier to tweak sketches, wireframes and prototypes than it is to tweak a product after launch. UX enables a company to work out what doesn’t work and then abandon it before the development phase rather than after.
Why does UX make products relatively immune to scope creet?
If you define the user’s needs and then design with them in mind; there should be a whole lot less scope creep and that makes it easier to budget for a project and to define a delivery timetable.
