lesson 3 the brain Flashcards
the brain controls what
complex behaviour
the brain contains millions of what
interconnected neurones
different parts of the brains carry out what
different functions
the highly folded outer part of the brain is called what
cerebral cortex
what are the functions of the cerebral cortex
language
memory
consciousness
the 2nd part of the brain is called what
cerebellum
the cerebellum does what
controls our balance and co-ordinates our movements
the final part of the brain is called what
medulla
what does the medulla do
it controls our heart rate and breathing rate
why is the brain very tricky to access
because it is protected by the skull
why is it difficult to work out exactly which part of the brain carry out specific functions
as the brain is extremely complex
the brain is extremely what
delicate and easy to damage
1 way scientists use to investigate the brain
brain damage-
look where the damage has taken place and try to link that part of the brain to the function
2nd way scientists use to investigate the brain
electrically stimulate different parts of the brain and look at the effects of the persons behaviour
this helps us to narrow down specific regions to their functions
3rd way scientists use to investigate the brain
MRI scanning to look at which parts of the brain are most active during different activities
when a person is looking at images, we see greater activity in the part of the brain responsible for image processing
