Lesson 3 Non-Cellular Flashcards
What are viruses?
Non-cellular pathogens that contain genetic material, either DNA or RNA and are enclosed by a protein coat called a capsid
What are the 6 types of viruses
HIV Hepatitis B Ebola Virus Adenovirus Influenza Bacteriophage
Viral Replication
The virus is engulfed into a host cell and inserts its genetic material into host cell’s DNA.
The virus uses host cell organelles to produce new protein coats (at the ribosome) and replicate genetic material.
How does Virus cause diease?
Virus invades a host cell
Damages/Destroys the cell
What are prions?
Abnormal Infectious proteins that fold in a different way and can damage the nerve cells
How does a prion cause disease?
Bursting of brain tissue causes holes (Spongiform encephalopathy)
What are 2 examples of a prion?
Kuru and BSE
