Lesson 7 and 8 Adaptive Immune Response Flashcards
What are Antibodies
type of protein that contains specific antigen-binding sites that are COMPLEMENTARY and SPECIFIC in terms of SHAPE and CHARGE to the antigen of a pathogen
What is the function of antibodies?
Prevent spread of pathogens
Remove and destroy pathogens from the body
What are the 3 ways that antibodies function?
Immobilize pathogens - Stop viruses from invading new cells
Agglutination of pathogens - Clumping together so that pathogens can be easily phagocytosed
Flag pathogens for phagocytosis
What are T cells and their function?
Type of white blood cell that responds to the antigen of a SPECIFIC pathogen
Activate B cells
Whole process of Adaptive Immune Response?
T helper cells recognize the specific non-self antigen and activate B cells
The B cells then divide by mitosis producing B memory cells and Plasma
The Plasma cells then produce specific and free-floating antibodies.
B memory cells remain in circulation in case of secondary infection from the same pathogen
