Lesson 1 Cellular Pathogens Flashcards
What is a pathogen?
A pathogen is a disease-causing agent.
What are the two types of pathogens?
Cellular
Non-cellular
What makes something cellular?
Made of cells
Able to reproduce independently
Able to undertake independent metabolic processes
What are 2 examples of each cellular pathogen?
Bacteria, Fungi and Parasite
Bacteria-Tuberculosis, Cholera
Fungi- Athletes foot, Ring Worm
Parasites- Tapeworm, Head lice
Benefits of Bacteria
Digest food
Absorb nutrients
Protect us from pathogenic bacteria
How do bacteria cause disease
Bacteria releases toxin
Bacteria population numbers are high due to rapid reproduction by binary fission
Increase the volume of toxin and causes illness
What are parasites and how do they live?
Multicellular pathogens that live on or in a host to gain nutrients.
What is an anitgen?
An antigen is a unique molecule or part of a molecule that initiates an immune response.
What is the difference between non-self antigens and self-antigens?
Self antigen= Recognised so no immune response
Non-Self antigen= Recognised by the immune system so immune response
