Lesson 3 Key Terms Flashcards
angular gyrus
QM: the association area of the brain
Located: in the posterior portion of the temporal lobe
Responsible for: linguistic processing, especially word recall
arcuate fasciculus
Qm: white, fibrous tract of mostly axons and dendrites
Location: underlying the angular gyrus
Responsible for: takes language organized in Wernicke’s area and transmits it to Broca’s area
Broca’s area
Qm: Broc no talk, but mouth move
Location: cortical area of the left frontal lobe
Responsible for: detaining and coordinating the programming of speech movement
central nervous system (CNS)
Portion of the main nervous system, includes the brain and the spinal cord
cerebellum
Qm: little brain
Location: has both the right and left hemispheres and a central region
Responsible for: considerable influence on language processing and on higher-level cognitive and emotional functions
cerebrum
Qm: upper brain
Location: holds the cortex and the subcortical structures
Ie) thalamus, cerebellum, hypothalamus, hippocampus
corpus callosum
Qm: neuron bridge of the brain
Location: between two hemispheres of brain
Responsible for: the main transverse tract of neurons, passes messages back and forth
cortex
The outermost grey layer made up of neuron call bodies
executive function
The self-regulatory aspect of writing enables the writer to plan, write according to that plan, and proofread and revise as needed
*doesn’t have to be about writing
Heschl’s area
Qm: hertz is sound
Location: in auditory cortex or each hemisphere
Responsable for: receives incoming auditory signals from the inner ear
information processing
A theoretical model of brain function that stresses methods employed in dealing with information
motor cortex
Qm: move it move it
Location: posterior portion of the frontal lobe
Responsible for: sending nerve impulses to the muscles
myelination
Qm: the sleeve of nerves
Process: maturation of the nervous system in which the nerves form the myelin sheath
neurolinguistics
Study of the anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of the brain responsible for language process and formulation
neuron
Nerve cell; basic unit of the nervous system
neuroscience
The study of Neuroanatomy (where structures are located in the brain) and Neurophysiology (how the brain functions)
peripheral nervous system (PNS)
Part of the main nervous system except the brain and spine
Ie) hands, foot, torso
prefrontal cortex
Qm: before front brain
Location: most anterior or forward position of the frontal lobe of the brain
reticular formation
Qm: nerves make shapes
Location: brain stem
Responsible for: sensory integration and for inhibitions (stop) or facilitations (go) of sensory information
supramarginal gyrus
Qm: super margin for long phrases
Location: posterior portion of the temporal lobe
Responsible for: linguistic processing, especially of longer syntactic units such as sentences
Synapse
Qm: space between
Definition: miniscule space between the axon of one neuron and the dendrites of another
thalamus
Qm: alamus = analysis, it’s the airport tower of the brain
Location: higher brain stem
Responsible for: recieveing incoming sensory information (NOT SMELL) and relays informative to the appropriate portion of the brain for analysis
Wernicke’s area
Qm: wern is a listener and slow to speak
Location: located in the left temporal lobe
Responsible for: language processing, aka, organizing the underlying structure of outgoing messages and analyzing incoming linguistic information
working memory
Memory in which information is held while being processed
