Lesson 3 Flashcards
ATS personnel provide four distinctive types of services to pilots, vehicle operators, and other types of air and ground traffic. What are they?
Information Services Advisory Services Control Services Alerting Services (Section 3 - 2/30 Key points)
What type of services do all ATS personnel provide?
All ATS personnel provide INFORMATION and ALERTING services.
Section 3 - 2/30 Key points
What type of service is particular to Air traffic controllers?
Air traffic controllers provide CONTROL services.
Section 3 - 2/30 Key points
What type of service is particular to Flight Service Specialists?
FSS provide advisory services but also provide control services to vehicles only.
(Section 3 - 2/30 Key points)
What type of information is included in INFORMATION SERVICES? (name 2)
Traffic and advisory services Adverse Weather conditions Unserviceability of navigation aids Alerting services Flight hazards (Section 3 - 3/30 Key points)
Under the umbrella of INFORMATION SERVICES are the Flight information service enroute (FISE) and pilot briefing service (PBS). What is the main difference between both and who provides this service?
FISE includes the provision of information about conditions - ALONG THE ROUTE OF FLIGHT - that are likely to make operations unfeasible or hazardous.
PBS is to ensure that pilots receive all pertinent aeronautical and meteorological information prior to flight.
Both are provided by Flight Service Specialists working in FICs.
(Section 3 - 3/30 Key points)
What type of information is included with Advisory Service? (give 2 examples)
Airport Advisory Service (AAS) includes information on local weather and traffic, runway conditions, wind, and altimeter, as well as emergency assistance.
(Section 3 - 3/30 Key points)
What is the difference between Airport advisory service (AAS) and Remote Airport Advisory service (RAAS)?
RAAS is similar to AAS, the difference being that RAAS is provided remotely.
Define Control Services
Control services ensure separation between aircraft in the air, vehicles on the ground, or both.
The objective of control services is to maintain a _____, _____, and _____ flow of traffic that is under control of their unit.
The objective of control services is to maintain a safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of traffic that is under control of their unit.
Other than ATC or ground controllers who else can provide Vehicle Control Services (VCS)?
Flight Service Specialists at airport advisory sites
Control Services are divided into 4 subcategories. What are they?
Vehicle Control Service is meant to eliminate the potential for collision between ground traffic and aircraft on the manoeuvering area.
Airport Control Service is provided by controllers working at airport control towers.
Terminal Control Service provided by terminal controllers
Area Control Service is provided by enroute controllers
Define Alerting Services
Alerting services are provided by ATS units to notify the appropriate safety services organizations about aircraft in need of search and rescue aid, and to assist such organizations as required.
Define FIC
Flight Information Center (FIC) - There are 7 throughout Canada each providing services to a very large area. An FIC is not associated with a single airport or a specific flight information region (FIR).
Define FSS
Flight Service Station (FSS) is usually located at a smaller airport with a lower density of traffic. Similar to a FIC, it is also staffed by flight service specialists.
