Lesson 26a: Class Aves- the birds (Chordates p3) Flashcards
What is in class Aves?
Birds
What are 4 characteristics that aid birds from class Aves in Flight?
A. Feathers
B. Vertebrates (their bones)
C. Respiratory system
D. Digestive system
Tell me about feathers that help birds from class Aves fly?
A. They are made of nonliving tissue, a protein called keratin
- Do not grow once they are formed
- Birds molt feathers, but not all at once.
- Help with sensation, regulating body temperature, and allow the bird
to detect things in the environment - Types
a) Down feathers: soft feathers that provide insulation and are very light
b) Contour feathers: strong feathers found on the body, wings, and tail that aid in flight
Tell me about birds bones from class Aves?
- Pneumatized bones: porous bones that are hollow and light
2. Some birds have dense bones filled with marrow (ex. penguins and kiwi).
Tell me about the respiratory system that help birds from class Aves fly?
- Air sacs provide a constant supply of oxygen while birds fly and keep birds cool by expelling heat.
- Bird lungs are much more efficient than mammal lungs.
Tell me about the digestive system that help birds from class Aves fly?
- High metabolism allows birds to break down fuel quickly, to minimize the weight of undigested food.
- Many birds must eat constantly to fill their energy needs.
Are birds in class Aves endothermic or ectothermic???
Elaborate on how they handle that…
They are endothermic, using energy from cellular respiration to keep warm
Tell me about birds circulatory system (class Aves)…
They have a circulatory system with a 4-chambered heart, allows complete separation of oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood
Tell me about birds vision (class Aves)…
- Well developed and powerful
- See in color
IT IS THEIR MOST HIGHLY DEVELOPED SENSE!
Tell me about birds reproduction system (class Aves)…
- Fertilization occurs internally when the male presses his cloaca to the female’s cloaca, releasing sperm inside her.
- Birds are oviparous: Eggs are laid by mother and the young develop inside the eggs and hatch outside the mother’s body.
- Eggs
a) Embryonic chick fed by a yolk sac and protected by white albumen
b) Covered in a hard shell made of lime and calcium
c) Both parents brood: sit on the eggs to keep them warm as they develop
What do birds use their beaks for (class Aves)?
to grasp and tear their food
What is a Hallux?
A backward facing toe birds in class Aves used for grasping
Why do birds (class Aves) migrate?
Birds relocate as the season changes where they have better access to food and nesting locations.
