what is global governance?
the ‘collective management of the planet’
what are actors, and what are the different types of what they do
-National governments, TNCs, international organisations
work together for global governance to be effective
reactive-addressing an issue before it becomes a crisis
proactive-acting to avoid having an issue in the first place

-how does it effect global governance
accepted standards of behavior
e.g. the right to freedom of speech
-not everyone has the same norms so makes gg complex
what are laws
rules established that are legally binding
e.g. human rights
what are institutions
political and legal insitutions
e.g. UN,WTO
what is the history of the 8 millennium goals
holistic (as a whole) and global approach to measuring and tackling development changes
-agreed at UN summit in 2000, aimed to achieve by 2015
-replaced by the ‘17 sustainable development goals’ ,with aims to achieve by 2030
what is the history of the 17 sustainable development goals
installed in 2015
‘participating development’
works with communities at threat- bottom up
-involves women more-engender development
what is the jurisdictional gap?
gap between increasing need for global governance and the lack of authority with the power to take action
what is the incentive gap?
gap between the need for international cooperation and the motivation to undertake it. This is closing as globalisation provides motivation for cooperation
what is the participation gap
international cooperation remains mainly in the hands of governments, leaving civil society groups at the edge pf policy making
-however, globalisation of communication is facilitating the development
what is the general assembly?
where all member states of the UN meet to discuss problems
-closest thing we have to a world parliament
-every country has one vote
what are the United Nations’ greatest successes and failures in terms of maintaining world peace
+benefitted international relations- since inception there hasnt been any world conflicts - supported nuclear disarment
-powerful military states have ignored the UN e.g. soviet union and china
-more nuclear powers
