lesson 14- carbon emissions and global warming Flashcards
what is the IPCC?
the international panel for carbon change
what is a continental shelf?
-ice age
land less than 200m below sea level
-in the ice age sea level was 135m, so they would only be 65m down
why does more carbon dioxide mean global temperatures rise?
earth is warmed by the sun. This warmth is returned from earth to the atmosphere via heat radiation
gasses in the atmosphere including CO2 absorb and reradiate the heat, some down to earth again
-more CO2 means more heat radiation is captured and re radiated back to earth
how much CO2 have humans added to the atmosphere (%)
42%
what has happened to global temperature in the last 5000 years vs the last 100 years?
-rose 4 to 7 degrees Celsius, but 0.7 in the last 100 years, which is roughly 10x faster
what is a new project that Switzerland are doing to provide renewable energy?
installing removable solar panels on railway lines
where is the largest offshore wind turbine?
China-Hainen
what is a possible type of car that could be used and why?
hydrogen
only emits water
how much if global methane emissions does producing rice account for?
12%
