Lesson 12- Types of Data Flashcards
What are the 8 types of data?
1) Nominal (discrete)
2) Ordinal (continuous )
3) Interval (continuous)
4) Quantitative
5) Qualitative
6) Primary
7) Secondary
8) Meta-analysis
What is nominal data?
Nominal (Discrete) Data- data in separate categories e.g. grouping people according to 👁 colour
What is ordinal data?
Ordinal (Continuous) Data- ordered data e.g. asking ppl make list of music genres order of liking
What is interval data?
Interval Data (Continuous) Data- measured using units of equal intervals e.g. centimetres- study own scales accepted as interval data e.g. mood 1-10
What is quantitative data?
Quantitative Data- how much, how long or how many etc. there are of something- measured in numbers of quantities- easy to analyse but may oversimplify data
What are the evaluation points of quantitative data?
👎- Lacks meaning- consists of just numbers or yes/no- ✖️ tell us the why- cause of 🏃♂
👍- Data ⬆️ objective & ⬇️ bias than qualitative data
👎- lacks validity & means might not be measuring 🔑 variables in aim
👍- Easier to analyse than qualitative data … comparisons, trends & patterns easily drawn
What is qualitative data?
Qualitative Data- cannot be counted or quantified- lengthy … lots of detail
What are the evaluation points of qualitative data?
👎- unreliable … if study repeated in future- unlikely that same results would be gained
👍- data ⬆️ in validity & usually measures concepts/ideas stated in aim
👎- researcher subjective when data analysed & difficult to generalise/make conclusions
👍- detailed data obtained- helps to appreciate complexity of human 🏃♂
What is primary data?
Primary Data- info observed/collected directly from first-🖐 experience- provides exact type of data researcher looking for BUT takes ⏰ & effort to collect
What is secondary data?
Secondary Data- info collected for another purpose- variation in quality & accuracy- hard for researchers to know reliability of secondary data
What is data gathered via meta-analysis?
Meta-Analysis- combining results from number of studies on particular topic to provide overall view
What are the evaluation points of data gathered by meta-analysis?
👎- prone to publication bias- researcher may leave out studies with 👎/non-significant results
👍- view data with ⬆️ confidence- results generalised across larger populations
