An event, series of events or set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life threatening (for them or their loved ones) and that had lasting adverse effects on the individuals functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional , or spiritual well being”
Signs and symptoms of trauma
Re experiencing the traumatic event
Avoidance and emotional numbing
Anger, irritability, guilty, shame or self blame
Substance abuse, depression and hopelessness
Suicidal thoughts and feelings
Feeling alienated, alone, mistrust and betrayal
Headaches, stomach problems and chest pain
What happens when you refer someone to victim support?
They need to give explicit consent and sign your notebook. If they refuse to sign then record this.
What info can you provide to do with victim support?
The Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 2003 states that:-
Where it appears that an offence has been perpetrated against a person then the Constable may, with the persons consent disclose any, or all of the following to a prescribed body with a view to it providing support to that person:-
name
address
telephone number
e-mail address
age
such information regarding the offence (or apparent offence) as the Constable considers appropriate provided that the information does not include such information in relation to the alleged perpetrator
