Lesson 1 - Topic 2 (Chemical Character) Flashcards
When hydrogen burns you hear a squeaky pop and on the sides of a dry container you can see condensation we can summarise the reaction by writing
Hydrogen + Oxygen (from the air) = Water
Iron + Sulfur =
Iron Sulfide
Magnesium + Oxygen =
Magnesium Oxide
What is an element
A substance consisting of only one type of atom
What is a molecule
A substance consisting of two or more atoms chemically bonded together
What is a compound
A substance that consists of to or more elements chemically bonded together
What is the test for hydrogen
If you apply a wood splint it will burn with a squeaky pop
Describe magnesium
Shiny grey solid
Describe oxygen
Colourless gas
Describe magnesium oxide
White ash
The reaction of iron and sulfur make Iron Sulfide describe the experiment
Iron and sulfur mix, when they are mixed it is still easy to separate them henceforth it is heated so it cannot be separated this forms a compound due to a chemical reaction
List two properties of the compound iron sulfide
Black, Solid
What is a mixture in chemistry
A mixture is a substance made by combining two or more different materials in such a way that no chemical reaction occurs.
In a chemical change a new substance always forms, what is the evidence of a new substance
Permanent colour change
Fizzing or sign of a new gas
Heat or light produced
A solid forms if I mix two solutions
