LESSON 1:Homeostasis and the characteristics of plants Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
A dynamic process in which physiological changes are made in response to external changes in the environment
What are the six characteristics of plants?
1) cell wall of cellulose
2) multicellular
3) chlorophyll a + b for photosynthesis
4) sessile
5) alternation of generations (gametophyte + sporophyte)
6) embryophyte (early sporophyte contained within gamete)
What do most plants produce as a photosynthetic pigment used in photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll
Where does the haploid phase of the plant life cycle begins?
In specialized cells of the sporophyte, where haploid spores are produced by meiosis.
What are spores?
Single haploid cells with fairly thick cell walls.
What happens when a spore germinates?
It divides by mitosis to produce a multicellular haploid gametophyte.
What is special about the embryo of land plants?
The embryo (new sporophyte generation) is retained inside the gametophyte tissue.
