Lesson 1 Flashcards
what is nutrition ?
how an organism acquires food and uses food to support all processes required for its existence
how do plants get their nutrition ?
plants are anchored by roots to the ground, absorb nutrients from the soil, and directed upwards towards the leaves. buds and flowers get the bulk of the nutrients.
what would the roundworm biologist study in nutrition, for example in the case of c. elegans ? (4)
locomotive behavior in foraging
type and rate of digestion
how nutrients are absorbed, stored, metabolized
neurobiology of foraging
why are roundworms great study subjects ?
their neurological simplicity
what is the science of nutrition ?
the science of food and which nutrients they contain, and of their actions in the body
what is nutritional genomics?
science of how nutrients affect activities of genes and how genes affect interactions between diet and disease
what did nutritionists do which added to the drawbacks in the field of nutrition ?
nutritionists broke down food into amalgam of nutrients and advised that we need x amount of these nutrients every day
are pop-tarts really food ?
no
what is food other than a collection of vitamins and minerals
a deeply satisfying activity
what does an essential nutrient mean ?
the body can’t synthesize it, or not in sufficient quantities
what are two main non-nutrients ?
fiber and phytochemicals
what does fiber promote ?
fiber promotes bowel health and elimination of food waste therefore reducing risk of colon cancer
what do phytochemicals do ?
antioxidants
what do flavonoids do?
thought to decrease risk of some cancers and improve memory
what group do flavonoids belong to ?
phytochemicals
