La métonymie

A

French: La métonymie emploie:
a) la cause pour l’effet ; b) l’effet pour la cause ; c) le contenant pour le contenu ;
d) le signe pour la chose signifiée ; e) le nom du lieu de provenance pour celui du produit.

English: refers to the person or thing by a name other than one’s own in order to make a point. metonymy is the use of a single characteristic or name of an object to identify an entire object or related object

Example: Crown. (For the power of a king.)
The White House. (Referring to the American administration.)
Dish. (To refer an entire plate of food.

L’allégorie

A

English: consists in representing an abstract idea in a pictorial way. It is therefore based on symbol(s). A set of clues refers to an idea such as justice, time, death, etc. It can use personification.

Example: 1. A blindfolded woman holding a scale: allegory of Justice.
2. The statue of Liberty: allegory of Freedom.
3. The dove and the olive branch: allegory of Peace.
4. A skeleton armed with a scythe (to represent death)
5. Cupid (to represent love)
