Pancakes are made as they use up eggs.

That he was tempted by the Devil but overcame him - his faith was stronger

How long does Lent last for in the Orthodox Church?

It is longer because Saturdays and Sundays are not counted as they are seen as festival days and Orthodox Christians believe that Jesus and his followers would not fast at a time of rejoicing.

To shave your head
Christians used to shave their heads as a sign of penitence before confessing their sins to a priest.
‘Shrove’ has come to mean ‘being forgiven’

Used to be strict - now most give up luxuries and try to live a simple, prayer filled life.
Roman Catholics no longer fast every day - Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory.
